5 Things to Do in May (for Your Home)

May 4, 2026

May has this energy to it — the windows are open, the light is back, and it genuinely feels like a fresh start. I love a new month, and May is one of my favorites for getting the home reset and ready for summer.

You don’t need a massive overhaul. Just five things. Do these this month and your home will feel lighter, cleaner, and more manageable heading into summer.

Download Your Free May Homekeeping Calendar

If you don’t have a plan, you’ll spend the whole month reacting instead of maintaining. The free May Homekeeping Calendar gives you daily and weekly tasks already laid out — so the decisions are made and all you have to do is show up.

Download it once and follow it for one week. Just one week. I think you’ll be surprised how different your home feels when you’re working a plan instead of guessing at it. New here? Go to this post for a little explanation for May.

Start the Garage or Basement Declutter

May’s Monthly Focus is the garage and/or basement You’re not cleaning it. Not yet. You’re just decluttering it.

Grab a trash bag and a donate box. Set a timer for 20 minutes. Go through one section — one shelf, one corner, one pile — and pull out everything that doesn’t belong or needs to go. That’s it.

You cannot organize clutter. But you can declutter in small sessions over the course of a month until the space is actually ready to be organized. A little something every day. It adds up faster than you think.

Make a Batch of DIY Daily Shower Spray

This is one of my favorite things to add to a bathroom routine because it does the work for you. After every shower, you spray it and walk away. No scrubbing, no rinsing, no effort.

The spray breaks down soap scum and hard water deposits between cleanings so that when Monday rolls around and it’s bathroom day, the shower is already halfway done.

I’ve been making this for years and it’s genuinely one of the simplest things you can do to make your bathroom easier to maintain. The full recipe and instructions are on the blog. Get the DIY Daily Shower Spray recipe here.

Do a Linen Refresh

This one takes almost no extra effort and makes such a difference. This week, wash all your towels, bath mats, and at least one set of sheets.

Fresh linens in May just feel right — like the home has had a deep breath. Once you’re in the habit of laundering everything on a regular cycle, it stops feeling like a project and becomes just another part of the routine.

While you’re at it: check your towels. If any are past their prime – scratchy, thin, slow to dry,  May is a great time to replace them. See my favorites here.

Set One Home Intention for May

Not a goal. Not a project list. Just one feeling you want your home to have this month. Maybe it’s calm. Maybe it’s guest-ready. Maybe it’s just “I want to stop feeling behind.”

Write it down somewhere you’ll see it – on a sticky note inside a cabinet, in your planner, on your phone. Let it be your anchor when the week gets busy and the motivation disappears. Motivation comes and goes, but intention and consistency keeps you pointed in the right direction.

A Fresh Start Is Available Any Time

You don’t have to wait for May 1st to begin. May 5th works. So does right now.

Pick one thing from this list and do it today. Just one. That’s the whole Clean Mama philosophy — a little something every day, and the home takes care of itself.
