Carpet and mattresses can get a little stale smelling and definitely need some spring cleaning. Using baking soda, this mixture stores well and looks cute too. Keep it on hand so you’re ready to freshen up these areas anytime.
Gather your ingredients:
- 2 cups ARM & HAMMERâ„¢ Baking Soda
- 1 tablespoon dried herbs – lavender buds are my favoriteÂ
- up to 20 drops essential oil, optional
- mason jar – I use this mesh lid for sprinkling, you can also use a fine mesh sifter as well
Carefully combine baking soda, dried herbs, and essential oils in a bowl and stir with a wire whisk.
Pour in a mason jar with a shaker top to store or feel free to store in a regular mason jar and use a mine mesh strainer to carefully sprinkle on mattresses or carpet.
Sprinkle on mattress or carpet – let sit for 15 minutes to an hour and vacuum as usual.  I use an attachment on my vacuum cleaner designed for upholstery to vacuum.
This is the same basic recipe as my Nightly Sink Scrub and Bathroom Scrub with the addition of the herbs. Check out those recipes and the routine that goes along with it! The Nightly Sink Scrub is one of my favorite little routines – it might just change your life.

Can I use the nightly scrub mix? (as I don’t have dried herbs handy) May I ask what the purpose for the herbs are in this particular freshener is? (Btw, have been trying out the nightly sink scrub routine and it’s amazing! It would be really helpful if I can use the same mix)

How long have you been doing this? Have you noticed any impacts on your vacuum? I really want to try it but I read the fine bicarbonate grit can ruin your vacuum.

Post authorI don’t do it with every vacuum, just once in a while as a freshening up. I’ve been doing that for years, no issues.
