DIY Homemade Cleaners {ingredients}
My preference is to purchase quality, non-toxic cleaning supplies, but I’ve been dabbling in some homemade recipes for the past year or so for a couple cleaning tasks, like washing hardwood floors. Today I’m starting a little series of homemade cleaning recipes. If you’ve been making cleaning supplies for years or if you’ve never tried to make your own cleaning supplies, hopefully you’ll learn something new and be inspired to clean a little differently. {If I am sharing a recipe here, I’ve tested it in my own home and like it enough to share it with you.}
Over the next couple weeks I’ll be sharing my favorite cleaning recipes with you and of course there will be some freebies to go along with the series.
Today I’m going to share my ‘must have’ ingredients for making some basic homemade cleaners. Yes, there are other ingredients you can purchase and use, but if you want to try it out without spending more than $25 or $30, just start here.
- distilled white vinegar
- baking soda
- essential oils (my favorite scents are lemon and clove)
- castile soap – liquid and bar soap (you can find this in different scents and unscented – my favorite is Dr. Bronner’s Citrus orange)
- lemons or lemon juice
- Borax
- Arm + Hammer Super Washing Soda
- containers
- water
What would you add to the list? Any favorite ingredients that you must-have?

Wohoo! When I saw those spray bottles I was drooling. Can’t wait to pick those up! I am a huge fan of making my own cleaning supplies and I love how much MORE effective they are. I am known to ramble about baking soda, I swear I have seen miracles happen with that stuff lol!

Got an error on that link. Tried several times. Any ideas? I love home cleaning products. I bought some bathroom cleaner the other day for some reason, must have hit my head???? anyway, I thought I would use it on the shower walls. I sprayed, I immediately hit the fan button, shut the door and coughed for about 5 minutes. that stuff is terrible. I haven’t used it for a few years, goodness I wonder how I ever used it to begin with.?!
Will keep up with the series. My grandmother used to carry a lemon around in her apron pocket when we cleaned house on the weekends. And we would use what we call play dough to clean the ceilings and wall paper. 😉

what is washing soda? And where can u buy essential oils? can u buy them in the stores?
Brenda Says
Hello,
I have been following along. I am going to try some of these. Does the all purpose cleaner go bad if you don’t use it right away? Can it be stored for future use?
Thank you so much for the great printable! It’s imformative and so pretty!
Great blog! Thanks for all the sharing of your hard work and talent!

I want to know too! Hopefully someone answers this. Sorry it’s not me. I’m trying to draw more attention to your post.
Please answer this question! It’s a good one.
Becky Says
Post authorHi Brenda!
Check out the post on the all-purpose cleaner – I go into a little bit of detail about the shelf life of the cleaner. Yes, I’d recommend using it within a couple days and/or storing the fridge:

I new to this blog, so please excuse me if this is something that has been covered in the past……
I like the ingredients you have listed above, but I use ammonia quite a bit, too. I know the fumes can be toxic, but if used when there is good ventilation and if the solution is not made too strong, it is a great cleaner. I find using tepid wanter instead of hot, steamy water keeps the fumes under control better.
I’m guessing it’s not on the list because of these problems.
Becky Says
Post authorHi Marie!
Yep, I’m not a big fan of ammonia because the fumes are too strong and because of its toxicity level.

Love the idea of making your own cleaning products. Will the laundry detergent be safe in a front loading HE washer?
Becky Says
Post authorYes, it is safe in HE washers – I’ve been using it in mine for months. The great thing about it is that it completely dissolves – not all powders do that!

I need a cleaner that i can use to disinfect the phone, radio, etc. after a bout w/ pink eye. any suggestions?
Becky Says
Post authorI’d use rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball – it won’t harm the plastic pieces and it’ll kill the ickies from pink eye.
xo, Becky
Patty Says
Rubbing alcohol. Put some on a cloth or cotton and wipe down the phone, keyboards, whatever. It will not hurt the items and will clean them up really nice. No worries. It is great, also, for cleaning the hand oils off phones and remote controls. Leaves the items fresh, clean and no germs.
rebecca Says
I keep a spray bottle of ammonia and water solution next to the garbage can. It keeps the animals away.

Thanks for the blog. I can not clean my own home as I am allergic or sensitive to harsh chemical, especially the ones normally used in the bathroom. As I have 4-pets and like a clean home, I have had to resort to paying others. In these economic times I want to start doing more cleaning myself. Thanks again and I love that most things can be made with $30.00 or less. I do like seventh generation counter disinfectant and I have started using baking soda for the sinks. It actually does a better job than scouring powers. I am wondering if I can change out the lemon for orange or grapefruit as I have these trees. Thanks again Clean Mama.

Soapnuts…not only for clothes washing but u can make things like liquid handsoap and all purpose spray, great for those with sensitivities and allergies 🙂
Cheri Says
I also like to include rubbing alcohol in window cleaning solutions. It eliminates streaking.

Thank you for all these wonderful ideas! I am very excited to begin making my own cleaning products. I do have a question regarding the essential oils, however. I was looking to buy them online, and was wondering what size you buy.I don’t want to buy one that is too small and end up not having enough, and the larger sizes tend to be expensive so I don’t want to buy too much either. The Mountain Rose Herb site has them in 1/2 oz, 1 oz, 4 oz, 8 oz, and 16 oz bottles.
Thank you again!
ps. I am LOVING your book, I just bought it!
Becky Says
Post authorThank you Clare! I would recommend 1/2 ounce to an ounce size. If you want to stock up, obviously buy a larger size but they are so concentrated I think you’ll be happy with the smaller size.

Great! Thank you Becky!

Becky-
Love your ideas!! Where did you find the glass bottles with the shaker lids for powder?
Becky Says
Post authorHi Laura! Thank you!
The glass bottles are from Amazon and the shaker lid is just cardstock that I cut to fit and punched holes in 🙂

Lisa Lovejoy Says
My go to glass cleaner has rubbing alcohol in it so I would add that. Maybe peroxide as well.
