Need a quick fix for cleaning the toilet? Or just a quick freshening up? Drop one or two of these in and let it sizzle away. Give it a scrub or just let it sizzle, then flush.
DIY Toilet Bowl Bombs
2 cups baking soda
1/3 cup citric acid
2 tablespoons hydrogen peroxide
15 drops lemon essential oil
5 drops peppermint essential oil
silicone ice cube tray
mason jar – I used two
I have all the ingredients in these and most of my DIY recipes in my Amazon shop here – look for the DIY cleaning section.
In a glass bowl, stir to combine the baking soda and citric acid. Slowly add the hydrogen peroxide – fizzing is normal – until the mixture is a thick and almost crumbly paste. Add the essential oils, combining them well.
Push the mixture into ice cube or silicone trays and allow to dry for at least 24 hours – outside in the sun works best. When the cubes or bombs are thoroughly dry (they should be very hard), remove them from the tray and store them in a glass jar with a secure lid.
Use one per toilet for a quick clean or an in-between-cleaning freshening up.
You can find this recipe and more in my newest book, Clean Mama’s Guide to a Healthy Home. If you don’t have the book, I highly recommend that you grab it and get started with my simple, room-by-room plan for a natural home.

Can you add oxyclean to this recipe? If so, what amount? Thank you.
b r Says...
Post authorYou can add a scoop to the toilet but the recipe already has hydrogen peroxide in it 🙂

I made this and it keeps growing and growing. What have I done wrong?

Post authorYou might have put too much in the compartment – press it down with the back of the spoon. It’ll dry and be fine.

Does hydrogen peroxide lose its germ killing effectiveness once out of the bottle? I thought I had heard that before.
Clean Mama Says...
Post authorYes – within an hour or two – always keep it in the bottle!

I am about to make these for the first time. Do you have to use a silicone ice cube tray or will a plastic one work too?
Clean Mama Says...
Post authorA plastic one should work too!

Post authorYes!

Would these need to be made into a “bomb?” Or, could I make the mixture up and keep it in a mason jar to sprinkle into the toilet to clean? Obviously I’m being lazy 😉

Post authorIf you omit the liquid you can do that!

Can these be put in the toilet tank too?
Clean Mama Says...
Post authorI haven’t tested that and wouldn’t recommend.

My bombs never solidified. When I attempt to remove them from the tray, they crumble. Any idea what I did wrong?
Clean Mama Says...
Post authorWere you using a silicone tray? It might have needed a little more time to harden.

Hydrogen Peroxide is about impossible to find where I am right now. I saw the previous comment about doing as a sprinkle. I did get some Sodium Peracarbonate. Do you think I could sub that in a sprinkle form?
Clean Mama Says...
Post authorSure!

Are they supposed to fizz up or just slowly dissolve as mine do? I changed the
essential oil from lemon to Ocean breeze. Thanks for the recipe!
Clean Mama Says...
Post authorSlowly dissolve with a little fizzing!
