Everyone loves freshly cleaned floors and this tip is a good one with a couple components that you might enjoy if you use a microfiber mopping pad for washing your floors. I love using microfiber for washing floors and for quick touch ups (3 kids and 2 dogs mean we do a lot of quick touch ups). I own and use 3 different microfiber mops – these are the ones I’ve kept after testing dozens of them. I switch back and forth but you could just choose the one you prefer or what is in your price range. You’ll see my favorites linked up below at the bottom of the post or in my Amazon shop here (under vacuums + floor care).
Sometimes a quick and simple tip that can make the mundane a little easier or make your life a little better makes a BIG difference. This is an ongoing series here on the blog where I share simple tips, finds, and suggestions to make life a little easier. I’ll be sharing these tips regularly on the blog and on Instagram– make sure you’re following along!  You can see all the Everyday Tips here.
The first component of this tip relates to how to best use the microfiber mop. Microfiber generally works better when it’s barely damp. Always start with hot water and soak the mop pad in your sink.
Then completely wring it out before you start mopping. The damp mop will work better on the floors – if I’m just using water to do a quick clean up, it’s ready to go. If I’m using a cleaning solution I spray the floor and mop with the damp mop.
FLOOR CLEANING TIP: If you have streaking on your floors with a microfiber mop, try rinsing your mop head frequently as you go. This ensures that you are using clean water – generally the streaks come from a dirty mop head.
Here’s the fun tip for giving your home a little aromatherapy while you’re washing your floors. Add 3-5 drops of essential oil on the microfiber mop head before you start mopping. I like using lemon or lavender – put the drops in a line down the middle of the mop head. I use vinegar or castile soap for washing floors – the essential oil just gives the room a little extra scent conveys that just cleaned feeling.
Put the mop head on the mop and start cleaning! I don’t re-apply the essential oil to the mop head when I rinse the pad, I find that it still carries the scent as I mop the floors.

What a fabulous idea. My kitchen, bathroom and toilet are tiled so will use this. I particularly love the idea of changing the essential oils according to the season.

Your full circle microfiber mop saved me. We moved to a new home that has no carpet on the main floor and using your suggestions and tips has made keeping my home clean. Your book is wonderful too! Thank you so much for making cleaning a joy and respected.

I love using peppermint EO for my floors because it seems to help keep ants at bay near outside doors and windows! I love using your DIY floor cleaner for my laminate and the granite/marble spray for my bathroom floors! No streaks and easy to mix up.

I am so happy I found you. I LOVE your book and all the recipes for cleaning supplies. I just moved to a new state last year. One of my arbitrary goals with the move was to make my own cleaning supplies. Finding you, your book and following you on insta has made that a reality!! Thank you! I have told so so many people about you as well. I even told the lady at Costco pharmacy the other day. 🙂 Keep sending us all the good info and THANKS A MILLION!!!

BUT REALLY, BECKY…
If you HAD to pick ONE microfiber damp mop, which one would it be?
My main concern is the strength of the handle/pole, followed by effectiveness.
Thanks!

Post authorIt depends on if you want to spray from the mop or not – I like the e-cloth mops and the Full Circle mops the best!

i use peppermint castile soap to mop our floors, as bugs don’t like it.

For those who use dish soap or Castile soap to mop wood floors, do you need to rinse afterward? I typically use 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts water so I don’t need to rinse. I think I will try adding the EO next time.
