When it comes to maintaining a clean and welcoming home, one of the most crucial areas to focus on is your floors. Clean and well-maintained floors not only enhance the overall aesthetic of your home but also contribute to a healthier home. In this blog post, we’re sharing some of our favorite Clean Mama DIY floor care recipes and products that will help you keep your wood, laminate, and tile floors looking their best.

Sweeping & Dusting:

Before diving into any floor care routine, it’s essential to start with a clean slate. Sweeping and dusting your floors regularly is the first step in preventing dirt and debris from accumulating and causing scratches. To make this task efficient and enjoyable, consider using a high-quality broom or microfiber dust mop. These tools effectively capture dirt and dust without spreading it around.

Product Recommendation: This floor dusting tool is versatile and designed for easy dusting and maintenance of your floors. Its soft, reusable microfiber head is perfect for trapping dust and dirt without scratching surfaces. Shake it outside as you go and wash after use.

Vacuuming:

Your vacuum choice depends on price/budget, home size, pets, etc. but I always recommend purchasing the best vacuum you can afford. From someone that was going through vacuums every year, it’s been wonderful to have (and love) the same for 7+ years.

Product Recommendation: This is a money saver in the long run, but it’s an investment. My #1 recommendation is a Miele canister (see all my faves at that link) – it works great for hard surface floors and carpet and is easy to maneuver. I love that it uses HEPA filtration and bags so I’m not dumping dirt into a garbage can only to have it bounce back into the air.

Washing Floors:

Washing floors is one of those tasks that everyone has an opinion about. From the ‘best’ tools, to the best products, everyone is looking for something that works better than what they are using. My opinion? Wash them weekly and you’ll find that not only will your floors look great, they’ll be easier to keep clean in between washing. Washing floors is one of the most gratifying homekeeping tasks there is—don’t you just love clean, shiny floors? The right tools and products make washing floors easier and effective. This post shares all my favorites beyond my top one below. Mop & Bucket floor washing is what I use for deep cleaning floors and baseboards. I do find that they leave more water behind than I like on my hardwood floors so I follow with a dry mop as I go.

Product Recommendation: I love the Bosheng Flat Mop & Bucket. Then if I’m doing a quick clean I’ll use a microfiber mop like this one, E-Cloth Deep Clean Mop, and spray the solution as I go.

Quick Tip for Microfiber Mop Pad: Dampen the mopping pad before starting and add a drop or two of essential oil to give your home an uplifting scent as you mop.

DIY Recipes:

Generally speaking, all you need for clean floors is water and soap – I prefer a vegetable-based soap like castile soap. It works great and is safe and natural. No fumes or chemicals to contend with.

Try this DIY Recipe for ANY floor – this recipe is for a 16 oz spray bottle and is super easy to mix up. Use it in a spray bottle or in a refillable mop. With just three simple ingredients, this just might be your new favorite way to wash your floors. Mix up a batch today and mop away. Head to this post for the full how-to.

Steam Mop:

  • For a deeper clean without the use of chemicals, consider investing in a quality steam mop. Steam mops use hot steam to loosen dirt and grime, and the microfiber pad attached to the mop head helps to trap and remove it. Steam mops are especially great for tile floors.

Product Recommendation: I recommend the Dupray Neat Steam Cleaner because you can use it on floors and so many other areas in the home like upholstery, appliances, tile, etc. and it achieves a deep clean without the need for harsh chemicals. It’s safe, eco-friendly, and perfect for homes with pets and children.

Stains & Carpet Cleaning:

I recommend two different carpet cleaning machines – my favorite is the Hoover for effectiveness and ease of use, but I’ve also used this Bissell – it’s fairly easy to clean and while it’s heavy, it works great! I like owning a machine because I can do a bedroom as needed or just the hallway. Once you have your carpet cleaner or have rented a machine, you’re ready to get started.

Decide on what method you want to use. Depending on the state of my carpet, I choose a cleaning solution. Here’s what I recommend:

4 Solutions to Clean Carpets

  1. Quick clean and freshen up: Equal parts white vinegar to hot water – this might sound odd and smelly, but it was recommended by a professional and it really works!
  2. Brighten up dull carpets, stain removal: 1 scoop Oxygen Whitener in tank of hot water
  3. Clean + brighten up carpets (my favorite method): 1 scoop Oxygen Whitener + 1 tablespoon BioKleen Carpet & Rug Shampoo
  4. Traditional carpet shampoo: BioKleen Carpet & Rug Shampoo
