Who doesn’t love the whiff of fresh laundry as you open the dryer? That undefinable scent that just screams, “I’m clean!” It’s not just about the detergent you use but a range of factors that contribute to this experience. Today, let’s discuss a few tips and tricks to ensure your laundry smells great, every single time.
The Foundation: A Clean Washing Machine
Before we dive into laundry dos and don’ts, let’s talk about the washing machine. It’s our trusted companion in the fight against dirt and stains, but sometimes, it needs some TLC. Over time, washing machines can collect residues from detergents, minerals, and fabric softeners. The result? A less-than-fresh-smelling laundry batch.
- Tip: Run an empty cycle with a mix of white vinegar once a month. This will not only help in de-scaling but also remove any lingering odors. Here’s how to clean your washing machine.
Dampness is the Enemy: Don’t Let Laundry Sit Wet
It’s tempting. You hear the washing machine’s finishing beep, but you’re knee-deep in something else, and you think, “I’ll get to it later.” Here’s the catch: Leaving your laundry damp in the washing machine creates a playground for mold and mildew. These culprits produce that musty, unpleasant smell.
- Tip: Try to make a habit of immediately transferring your clothes to the dryer or hanging them out to dry. If that’s not feasible, set a reminder on your phone!
A Lesson in Space: Don’t Overfill the Machine
We’ve all been there, trying to fit just one more pair of jeans in the washer, thinking it won’t make much of a difference. Overfilling the machine can prevent clothes from being properly rinsed and cleaned. This means they might come out smelling less than fresh.
- Tip: Stick to the manufacturer’s guidelines about load size. Remember, clothes need room to tumble and swish around!
Rethink Fabric Softener
While fabric softeners can give clothes a soft feel, some of them tend to coat the inner workings of the washing machine, leaving residues behind. These residues can trap unpleasant odors. Additionally, there are quite a few chemicals lurking in traditional fabric softeners that you don’t necessarily want on your body.
- Tip: If you’re attached to the softness, why not try a natural alternative like vinegar? It naturally softens fabrics without leaving residues. Just ¼ cup per load in the softener compartment or a softener ‘ball’ is all you need!
The Magic of Wool Dryer Balls
Wool dryer balls are a sustainable, chemical-free way to soften your laundry. Plus, they cut down drying time, saving you a little bit on your energy bill.
- Tip: Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the dryer balls for a subtle, delightful fragrance.
The Extra Rinse Cycle: A Secret Weapon
If you find that your clothes still have a detergent smell after washing or if you or a family member has sensitive skin, the extra rinse cycle is your friend. It ensures that every trace of detergent and residues is thoroughly washed away.
- Tip: Make it a routine for heavily soiled clothes or those detergent-heavy washes. I always give workout clothes an extra rinse to ensure any stinkiness is gone.
Making your laundry smell fresh is a combination of maintaining your machine, being timely, and using natural alternatives. Implementing these simple steps can transform your laundry game, making every clothing item a fresh-smelling joy to wear. Happy laundering!

Rose McCluskey Says...
The spray detergent is wonderful. I was skeptical myself at first. People use way too much detergent which leaves soap film on clothes and is really bad for drainage. Less is more. Read the amount. I really like the spray detergent and refills. I don’t use softner. You should never use softner on towels but I bet you can use 1/4 c vinegar. Get that soft feeling.
