One Ingredient Odor Absorbers : Simple Solutions for Life’s Stinky Problems
Have you ever had an odor that lingered, kept coming back, or just wouldn’t go away? Today I’m sharing 3 simple odor absorbers that only require ONE ingredient. Chances are you have these ingredients on hand – file the idea away and next time you have a lingering odor, open your pantry and eliminate that odor. Better yet, you’ll be getting rid of the odor naturally, without artificial fragrances.
Baking Soda
- sprinkle in smelly garbage cans
- sprinkle on stinky carpet, let sit, vacuum up
- keep a box in your refrigerator or freezer to absorb odors
White Vinegar
- smelly kitchen odors (like a dinner smell that won’t go away). Pour 1/4 – 1/2 cup in a small bowl and let it sit uncovered on a counter for 24 hours.
Essential Oil
- put a drop or two of your favorite essential oils (lemon, lavender, and cedar are great for freshening a drawer) on a cotton ball or cotton pad and tuck in a musty dresser drawer, a stuffy closet, stinky shoes, gym bag, vacuum cleaner bag or canister, etc. Find essential oils in my shop here.

Becky/Clean Mama,
I have a Fairly new Bissell Power Clean Vacuum cleaner with a Hepa filter which I am finding harder and harder to clean after every use. The reason being that we have two large, in house dogs, both are shedding machines varying only by the color and length of their hair.
The last two weeks when I have vacuumed our multitude of area rugs and runners (we have wood flooring that we hard trying to protect) the vacuum smells odorously doggy. I have been taking the vacuum cleaner apart, cleaning everything, washing pre-motor filter and have changed the Hepa Filter once.
Is there anything that you know of that will help me remove the eau de dawg that lingers before and after vacuuming. I do sprinkle baking powder in the heavily trafficked areas.
Thanks,
Anne, dog lover

Post authorI’d try taking it apart and washing it and letting it sit out in the sun to dry thoroughly. If I remember correctly that vacuum cleaner has a dirt bin? Make sure you are emptying it after each vacuum and if you have essential oils, put a couple drops of your favorite scent on a cotton ball and put the cotton ball in the bin before vacuuming. Good luck!

My sons soccer cleats stink after he plays soccer. Which method would you use?
Thanks,

Hi! I was wondering if you might be able to explain to me the difference between “White Distilled Vinegar” and “Cleaning Vinegar”? The only difference I can see is that the acidity is higher. Is that for when I want a deeper clean? Would that mean that I will have to dilute it with water more if I use it, say on hardwood floors? Thank you for your advice.
Becky Says
Post authorCleaning vinegar has a higher acid ratio – the difference isn’t that much in the scheme of things – either one can be used interchangeably 🙂

We discovered a plastic bag with red onions that stunk to high Heaven. It was in a base cabinet directly on the wood. We have tried emptying the cabinet of all appliances and put in a dish with baking soda. Smell is still there. Any suggestions?

Post authorI’d try white vinegar on a cloth and wipe it thoroughly – repeat a couple times and keep the drawer open or let it sit outside in the sun.

I’ve got a potty training son and can’t seem to get the smell of urine out of the bathroom around the base of the toilet. I spray and clean and clean and spray and scrubbed but it always seems to smell. What can you suggest??
