The days after the holidays can feel strangely heavy. The celebrations are over, the house is full, and everything feels a little louder than usual. This checklist isn’t about scrubbing or organizing perfectly—it’s about gently returning your home to a place that feels functional, calm, and livable again.
Plan for 60–90 minutes total, or spread these steps over a couple of days if that feels more realistic. Progress matters more than speed.
Step 1: Trash + Recycling First (10 minutes)
Start by removing what no longer belongs in your home. This step alone makes a visible difference and immediately lowers the noise level in your space.
- Break down gift boxes and shipping boxes
- Recycle wrapping paper, gift bags, cardboard, packaging
- Toss broken toys, empty packaging, and inserts
- Empty all trash and recycling bins
Focus here: Don’t sort or second-guess. Your goal is simply to remove the excess so you can see what you’re working with.

Step 2: Gift Triage (15 minutes)
Gifts tend to linger when decisions get postponed. Handling them once, with intention, prevents weeks of clutter.
Create three clear zones:
- Keep & Use – items you love and will actually use
- Donate / Regift – items that don’t fit your life right now
- Return – items that need to go back
- Put “Keep” items directly into the room or drawer where they belong
- Start a donation bag or box immediately
- Collect receipts and return items in one labeled envelope
If an item doesn’t have a home, this is your sign to either make one for it or let it go.

Step 3: Decor Reset (20 minutes)
You don’t need to pack everything away perfectly or label bins today. You just need to bring visual calm back to your everyday spaces. If you aren’t ready to pack things up yet, skip to the next section and come back here when you’re ready to do a decor reset. (I wait until the first week of January to put things away).
- Remove holiday décor from high-traffic areas first
- Group décor by where it was used (tree, mantel, entryway, outdoors)
- Pack items together loosely—perfection isn’t required
- Add simple labels so future you knows what’s inside
Helpful shift: Store décor by area, not by theme. This makes decorating—and undecorating—much easier next year.

Step 4: Surface Sweep (10 minutes)
This is where your home starts to feel lighter and more open again.
- Clear kitchen counters
- Reset the dining table
- Clear the coffee table and entryway surfaces
Avoid reorganizing or deep cleaning. This is about restoring breathing room, not creating a new system.
Step 5: Laundry + Linens Reset (10–15 minutes)
The holidays leave behind layers—extra blankets, guest towels, and well-used linens that need a refresh.
- Wash throw blankets and couch covers
- Launder guest towels and bath mats
- Put seasonal linens away
- Reset everyday linens for the week ahead
Clean fabrics instantly make your home feel cared for again.

Step 6: Food & Fridge Reset (10 minutes)
This is a quick pass meant to clear mental clutter as much as physical clutter.
- Toss expired leftovers
- Consolidate snacks and treats into one space
- Freeze what won’t be eaten this week
- Wipe shelves if needed
You’re aiming for clarity and simplicity—not a deep clean.

Step 7: Choose Your “First Normal Week” Focus (5 minutes)
Before you move on, pause and decide what needs your attention next.
Ask yourself:
- What feels most overwhelming right now?
- Laundry?
- Paper and mail?
- Meals?
- Bedrooms?
Write down one clear focus for the coming week and let everything else wait.
This reset isn’t about catching up or starting over in a dramatic, all-or-nothing way. It’s about creating just enough order that your home begins to support you again instead of quietly draining your energy. When there are fewer piles, clearer surfaces, and a sense of normal slowly returning, everything feels more manageable. It doesn’t need to be perfect or polished—just calm enough that you can breathe, think clearly, and move into the next season with a little more ease.

Small steps like these are how your home—and your routines—settle back into place after the holidays.

I am 61 and still struggling post holiday with the disaster.
Thank you for this terrific post. My brain has not worked like this in the past, and I look forward to trying a new mindset and practice.

I have Christmas dishes and haven’t figured out a great way to store them! I see that you have awesome storage solutions. Can you share the details on where you got them? Thanks much!

This is a very practical and calming post-holiday cleanup checklist. I like how it focuses on small, manageable steps instead of overwhelming tasks. The time-based approach makes it easy to follow, even during busy days. The emphasis on reducing visual and mental clutter really stands out. It’s refreshing to see a guide that prioritizes comfort and functionality over perfection. This is definitely helpful for easing back into a normal routine after the holidays.
