Freezers can be difficult to organize with a constant flow of food in and out. During 2020 I was utilizing the freezer and storing a lot of protein ‘just in case’ and found that it was hard to keep it all straight. I grabbed a couple extra bins that we had used for kids’ storage just to see if they would work and they were the perfect size to fit two across the freezer shelf. Guess what? They haven’t left the freezer since.
What do I keep in the two bins? One holds beef and one holds chicken, turkey, and pork. I could label them but this works and it’s easy for me to pull out a bin and see what’s in it. This quick tip has two points to it:
- Use what you have first and see if a bin or container will work. Even if you’re just trying something out for size, it’s better to try it out for a bit first.
- Freezers don’t have to be black holes – a simple bin or container can make a big difference!
These are the White Nordic Storage Baskets from The Container Store – you can find all the sizes, lids, and labels at this link.
If you don’t have a bin or basket on hand, these are a great solution! Measure first to make sure it will fit your space. Happy freezer organizing!

I reuse boxes in my freezer. Even a box from a 12-pack of soda cans – a box I would have thought to be way too flimsy – works beautifully for me. Those boxes are the perfect size for the meat we order from a local farm! They definitely aren’t pretty, but it’s totally worth it to try to use what you already have!

Yes, the bins for my freezer in the fridge works wonderfully! I use Aldi freezer bags in my chest freezer.

I’ve been doing this for years. It makes keeping a freezer inventory and rotating stock so easy!

Would love to see options for bottom freezers. Mine is ok, but I’m certain it could be better.

We had just bought the smallest-possible chest freezer in 2019 — and then, yes, run into organization problems. I wound up buying a set of reusable grocery bags in different colors: fish in the blue bag, bread and potato products in green, etc. The freezer is still too full! But it’s easy now to pull out a bag or two and get right to the one I want.
