Healthy Home Week – Sheets + Towels Day:

Through my extensive research for Clean Mama’s Guide to a Healthy Home (pre-order here) I’ve come to the conclusion that laundry products can be the most dangerous products in our homes. Why? We wear clothes, pajamas, and sleep in bedding that is laundered in detergent and fabric softener. We don’t get away from the chemicals that are in laundry products. Most conventional fabric softeners and dryer sheets contain artificial fragrances and ingredients that are known to cause and/or exacerbate existing respiratory and asthmatic irritations and problems. These ingredients are toxic and harmful to anyone, not just people with existing problems. Don’t just assume that something is safe because the company says it is or because the product says ’natural’. This post goes into detail about why I only use white vinegar and wool dryer balls as my ‘fabric softener’. Want to see my favorite laundry products? Go here.

Here’s your plan for the weekend:

Saturday / SHEETS + TOWELS DAY
make beds
check floors
wipe counters
clutter
laundry

I wash sheets and towels on Saturday because everyone can get involved and who doesn’t love clean sheets?

Why does this work?  Consistent sheet washing is what makes this work. I wash sheets and towels on Saturdays and find that all week long the beds are easy to make and they’re even quicker to change the sheets.  So simple and easy.  I don’t change the duvet cover every week but I do change it bi-weekly or every third week as needed.

A trick for getting that duvet cover on quickly + easily (like 2-3 minutes easy):

  • Turn the duvet cover inside out.
  • Place it on top of the comforter.
  • Tie any ties in place (if you have them).
  • Grab the top left corner and pull it over the comforter and repeat with the left side.
  • Pull the cover over the comforter and shake it out a bit and arrange it on the bed.
