This recipe for homemade hot chocolate is great for gifting or just for keeping in your cupboard for cold days. It will store for a few months in a cool dark place and in a covered container.
- 2 1/2 cups sugar
- 1 1/2 cups unsweetened cocoa – I used double dutch process cocoa, but regular cocoa will work just as well
- 3 teaspoons sea salt
Combine ingredients in a bowl and stir to combine with a wire whisk. Transfer to a 4 cup canning jar or other smaller containers for gifting.
To mix up as hot chocolate, simply add 2 tablespoons of the mix to one cup of hot milk (any type will work, but whole milk will give you the richest and smoothest hot chocolate) If you are a non-cow’s milk family you could experiment with soy and almond milk as well.

Hello! I’m from Finland. And I’m always thinking, how much is a cup in decilitres? Many Finns are thinking that, because in Finland we use decilitres… Can you help me?

1 cup = 2.36 deciliters or 236 ml (though most people just go with 250 ml for a cup as it is easier).
Aurelia Says...
1 cup = 0.24 litres (240 ml)

2.5 cups =5.91470591 deciliters
1.5 cups =3.54882355 deciliters
So I’d say
6 deciliters sugar
3.5 deciliters cocoa

Sounds like a simple recipe. How does it taste with water (in place of milk)?

I really liked this recipe, mainly because I had all the ingredients. I did add 2 TSP of Cinnamon and would try Chili powder or Cayenne or Coffee to cut the sweetness ( and I love sweetness). Maybe it was the marshmallows I added…. Thanks for the great recipe for Hot Cocoa.
