If you workout frequently or enjoy wearing workout wear, you have most likely experienced stinky workout wear. That unfortunate occurrence when the stink lingers after the clothes are clean and dry? The fibers of workout wear are generally not natural and tend to hold odors due to the type of material and how tightly that material is woven. It can be hard for detergents to penetrate the tight weave.
The super simple trick to keep the stink out of your workout wear?
Just add an extra rinse. The extra rinse ensures that you remove any detergent and most importantly, any trapped odors.
I use 5 sprays of Laundry Detergent Spray, run the quick wash cycle and add an extra rinse. Once it’s washed I dry on low.
A couple more tips for keeping your workout wear odor free:
- Use a detergent with enzymes – liquid works best! I use Laundry Detergent Spray – when I was doing my product testing, the first thing I tried it on was my husband’s workout gear. If it didn’t get that clean, I would have stopped my testing and looked for another product. It works so well because it’s powered by an enzyme blend that searches out dirt, stains and odors.
- Never use fabric softener. The fabric softener coats the fibers making it difficult to clean the clothes. You can use 1/4 cup white vinegar in each load if you’d like instead of fabric softener, but I don’t for workout wear.
- Don’t over-dry workout wear. As soon as the clothes are dry, remove them from the dryer. Letting them continue to dry too long just makes for static-y gear and no one wants clingy shorts.
- Launder workout wear with workout wear. The clothes will get cleaner and they’ll be easier to sort and put away.

I had no idea! I’ve been trying so hard to figure out how to get the smell out of our sweaty clothes! Also it doesn’t help that I just realized i ran out of my Clean Mama detergent right around the same time and started using what I had leftover from a different brand! Guess I’ll be ordering more today! Haha It’s bar none my favorite!!

Just curious why no vinegar use for the workout wear? I have recently started adding vinegar in place of fabric softener to all my loads. I do launder workout wear separately, so just wondered why no vinegar?
