Use What You’ve Got (or Can Find)
I love so many things about fall, but one thing that I especially love is that fall “decor” is all over outside and it’s free. Case in point:
Look what we found at a park area on a walk yesterday
We started loading them up in our stroller and a lady came running out of her house with a bag to snag some up too – I think she thought we were going to take all the good ones (there were hundreds of them). She said that Martha uses them to decorate with – and I thought I was all clever to grab the horse-apples.
I tucked them in with my mum planters – love the contrast of the bright green and dark pink (can’t wait for the mums to pop open). Homey goodness on the porch – love it!
What’s your favorite “find” for adding a bit of homey goodness inside or out?
Cute idea. We have a buckeye tree outside our house. I think they would be very pretty in a tall glass jar, but I won’t bring anything from outside in. One year we saved a ton of them up and put them in the garage. I thought in the winter I would take my duaghter out to put them in the yard for squirels. That year we had mice..so never again..lol.
Osage oranges and the oil they produce are supposed to keep spiders away. I don’t know how true that is, but I know several arachnophobes who will stop the car on the side of busy highway to pick a few up every year!
I just think they’re pretty. 🙂
Osage apples DO keep away the spiders! Keep a couple tucked away in your closets and you won’t have any spiders around. W call them monkey brains here 🙂
I love decorating with acorns and slices of a small cedar tree that we had to cut down. Love osage oranges! We don’t have any around here though.

We call them hedge balls or hedge apples here. Always put some around the house for decoration (and in closets to discourage spiders & crickets). They look pretty piled up in a wooden or crock bowl.
I used some items around the house to create a display with my quilted ornaments – http://prairiecreationsornaments.com/?p=305

Spider repellent? Love that! Thanks for sharing 🙂
My mom gets some every year to keep the spiders away. She swears that they work.
Never heard of horse apples before…but they’re pretty.
Stuff Parents Need Says
Oh my. I have these in my backyard (just moved here) and I had no idea what they were. I think of them as just a nuisance! 🙂 But I suppose they are sort of pretty now that you mention it!
