The Decide-Less Cleaning Guide: A Simpler Way to Care for Your Home

January 13, 2026

On days when you don’t know where to start with your home but you know you need to do something, you need a plan. You don’t want to decide what to clean, open an app, or start something you won’t have the energy to finish. You just want things to feel a little easier. That’s exactly why I created the Decide-Less Cleaning Guide. It’s a one-page, paper-based reset for the days when life keeps going but your energy isn’t there to match the mess.

What “Decide-Less” Really Means

The hardest part of cleaning isn’t always the cleaning, it’s the deciding. Where to start, what matters most, and how much is enough all take more mental energy than we realize. The Decide-Less Cleaning Guide removes that burden by giving you three simple paths to choose from depending on how the day feels. Stop thinking and just start.

Start With the Tone

At the top of the page, you’re invited to begin with one or two small, analog resets: opening a window, lighting a candle or turning on a diffuser, putting on a familiar playlist, turning off notifications, or making a cup of coffee or tea. This isn’t about productivity, it’s about signaling to your body that you’re shifting into maintenance mode. That small pause changes how the rest of the page feels.

If You Don’t Know Where to Start

The guide offers three steady anchors: making beds, doing one load of laundry, and resetting the kitchen. These are the quiet tasks that keep chaos from piling up. When they happen — even imperfectly — your home stays in a place you can live in, not just catch up to.

If You Have a Little More Energy

There’s also a simple weekly rhythm built in – this is the Clean Mama Routine – bathrooms, dusting, vacuuming, floors, a catch-all day, and sheets and towels. There’s no pressure to do everything at once. You simply follow the day’s focus and move on. No guesswork, the thinking is done for you.

If Everything Feels Like Too Much

Some days even a routine feels heavy, which is why the bottom of the page gives you permission to choose just one small thing like clearing one surface, emptying a trash can, starting the dishwasher, or folding a load of laundry, and then stopping. This is where real consistency is built, not by pushing harder, but by showing up in small ways even on the hardest days.

Why This Works

The Decide-Less Cleaning Guide isn’t a challenge or a checklist to keep up with, it’s a companion. You can tape it inside a cabinet, slip it into a planner, or keep it on the fridge where you’ll see it. It stays quietly in your line of sight, reminding you that you don’t have to do everything to make your home feel better. You just have to do something small – everyday a little something!

Today was one of those days. I’ve just come off two weeks of hectic, getting a grandson married 2 days ago. The groom arrived right after Christmas, staying with us. The rest of our family followed shortly after. I managed to accomplish most of my weekly cleaning tasks, although the floors only got spot-cleaned while everyone was here. But on the 2 days right after the wedding, I got no rest, with appointments and errands. Today I had planned to dust the house and clean our guest bath. Instead, I was dead tired, so chose my daily kitchen tasks, because dirty dishes make me itch. I haven’t even done my weekly planner reset.

Tonight I feel more rested than I have in days and ready to get back to my routine tomorrow. So to answer your question, yes, this strikes a deep chord within me.

I’ve been following the routine for years, and I do love the simplicity of knowing “today is X which means Y…” it’s so helpful! I love you reframing it as analog cleaning.

This is great for ADD cleaners! We have a list and a FOCUS each day. And once we accomplish the dailies and task of the day, we can jump around and do this and that cleaning/decluttering tasks. Such a great system!
