How to Keep Your Kitchen Counters Clutter-Free
September 23, 2025Raise your hand if your kitchen counters are a magnet for clutter. Between mail, keys, random toys, and that proverbial water bottle no one claims, it’s easy for counters to become a dumping ground. You probably know that cluttered counters equal a cluttered mind. I find that cluttered counters feel more messy than other areas of the house. You too? Let’s fix that with one simple rule: the touch it once rule.

Here’s how it works: Every item that lands on your counter gets dealt with immediately—no procrastinating, no “I’ll get to it later.” Mail? Open it, recycle the junk, and file the important stuff right away. Keys? Straight to the hook or tray where they belong (bonus: you’ll never lose them again!). Dishes and silverware? Either washed or loaded into the dishwasher—no letting them pile up. Kitchen sink? Emptied and wiped down after dinner so it’s fresh and ready for the next day. Random toys? Back to their home (or, if you’re in a rush, into a designated basket to sort later).
This “touch it once” rule is a game-changer. It’s simple, quick, and works all over the house, but it’s especially powerful in the kitchen—where counters tend to be the biggest clutter magnets. By dealing with items immediately, you’re not only keeping your counters clear, but you’re also creating a sense of calm and order that makes your entire kitchen feel more functional and inviting. Plus, it saves you time in the long run—no more shuffling piles of stuff from one spot to another or spending hours catching up on clutter.

Start here: If this feels a little too intense for you, keep a designated basket or bin in an inconspicuous place in the kitchen to corral the clutter until you have time to sort it. This helps to reinforce the one-touch rule but allows for you to keep moving in the kitchen instead of it being a start/stop routine.

Want to take it a step further? End your day by wiping down your counters with a fresh-smelling DIY spray – I use my DIY Stone Spray for just about everything in the kitchen. It’s such a small habit, but it makes your whole kitchen feel instantly cleaner and more inviting. Pair this habit with a Nghtly Kitchen Reset: wipe down the counters, sweep the floor, and set out a fresh dish towel. It’s a small routine that makes a big difference, leaving you with a clean, calm kitchen to wake up to every morning. I love to end the evening with clean counters and my Nightly Sink Scrub.
If you’re ready to simplify your entire home, not just your counters, The Clean Mama Method is your go-to guide. It’s a 21-day reset designed to teach you the exact steps to create a calm, clean home without the overwhelm. And don’t forget, the Homekeeping Planner is perfect for tracking your daily resets and routines.

Any suggestions for a kitchen counter bin to corral those dishes until we can get to it?
How about a collapsible wash station!?

I need an article about how to get the husband onboard to stop putting random things on the counter, married 47 years and he has yet to put something away in a timely manner—any tips for me?
Can you talk to him about it? Alternatively you could put a basket where he puts things on the counter and ask him to put his stuff there?
