Lemon + Clove Nightly Sink Scrub
April 17, 2014
Today I’m sharing one of my most-used and favorite recipes – Lemon + Clove Nightly Sink Scrub. I use this nightly as part of my ‘cleaning up the kitchen’ routine. (Go to this post to see my favorite products to DIY your cleaners.)
You’ll love this super simple concoction for Lemon + Clove Nightly Sink Scrub from The Organically Clean Home – it smells divine and is a great way to end the mountain of dishes accomplished. You’ll love how the recipes are organized. Each recipe has clear (easy and quick) instructions and a lot of the recipes have other tips and tricks included as well. Many recipes have variations so you’ll see unscented versions as well as other scent combinations to try.
Gather your simple ingredients (this recipe can easily be cut in half if you don’t want to mix up a whole batch).
- 2 cups baking soda
- 10 drops lemon essential oil
- 10 drops clove essential oil
- castile soap (or dish soap) (this is not added to the baking soda until it’s used – keep reading!)
- container with a shaker top – I used a Ball canning jar (anniversary edition), cut cardstock for the top (instead of the metal lid and punched 4 holes with a standard hole puncher.
I keep this jar under the kitchen sink and it doubles as an air freshener/odor absorber as well – there’s another way to use it in the book too.
See how easy it is to mix up and use…

I can’t wait to get my book tomorrow!!!
Heather Says...
I just preordered your book, can’t wait to get it. Fortunately I have Amazon prime so it will be here pretty quick. It will be perfect timing as I haven’t started spring cleaning since it is still cold here and we had snow yesterday. I can’t get into the deep cleaning without being able to get the windows open.
Judy Says...
I’m ordering the book now! Can you tell me where you buy your oils……on line…in a store??
Thanks!
Becky Says...
Post authorI buy my oils from doTERRA but you can also find them at your local health food store, on Amazon, and another favorite brand of mine is Beeyoutiful.

I am getting your book. Love this. One question, though. Can this mixture be used on black cast iron sinks?
Becky Says...
Post authorI had a black porcelain sink that it worked wonders on. Do a little test first and make sure, but it should be great.

Thank you!!!

LOVE this!! I’ve been using Bar Keepers Friend for years for my sink and not really sure it’s not harmful. I’m definitely trying this! What a wonderful idea to use cardstock and punch holes in it!!

Becky, I enjoy your blog, but I find myself accessing it most often on my mobile device (often via Pinterest) just wondered if you’d considered adding a mobile version. It would load faster and be more user-friendly for us mobile readers! Thanks for a great resource.

Hi Becky! Congratulations on your book! I would love to swap all my cleaning supplies to your organic ones. But I’m still on the hunt for ingredients like backing soda (I have only ever seen backing powder here in Switzerland), or what is Borax? But I will have to try your bathroom disinfectant spray. This seemed easy enough, with ingredients I know. 🙂 Tina
Megan Says...
Tina,
Baking soda is Natron in Austria, maybe the same in switzerland. Good luck!
Wildviolet Says...
Baking soda is also known as sodium bicarbonate.Borax is a mined mineral, I think. Also in the sodium family.

I understand that it’s better for the environment but is it really more cost-effective to make your own cleaners or is it mainly just a sense of creative satisfaction that drives your concoctions? Anyways, congrats on your book, you’ve been a nice resource for me and my cleaning business.

I love the canning jar idea so much that I want to copy it exactly! Is that ok? haha. What size canning jar did you use and where did you get them?
Becky Says...
Post authorTHey’re just the small vintage look ones – you can get them from Target and Wal-Mart!
Leann Says...
What a great idea. I used Young Living Essential Oils for mine and it worked beautifully!! Thanks for the tip!
Susie Says...
I just made this sink scrub!! Works wonderfully and smells heavenly! I didn’t have clove oil, so I used “germ fighter” from plant therapy. It has clove in it.thank you for this recipe!!
debbie Says...
Which version of the castile soap do you use? most are scented and I’m not sure if the unscented can be used for this purpose. Thanks!!
Becky Says...
Post authorI use the citrus 🙂
Mindy Says...
My PURE-CASTILE SOAP is PEPPERMINT. Are the other essential oils JUST aromatics? Or do they have a special job?
Becky Says...
Post authorThey can be antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial 🙂

I live in a mountainous rural area on the east coast of northern Queensland in Australia and we are not on town water so I have to be careful what I a) flush down my sinks because it will wind up sprayed in my back yard and b) flush down my toilet because if the new additions upset the delicate biological balance (see what I said there lol?) I will need to get the tank pumped out.
Having said all that, I am looking forward to ordering your book because I think that the ingredients you use (I can’t use bleach or any strong chemical type detergents etc) will suit our tropical lifestyle.
Love and light!

How much dish soup do you add? I only have liquid soap.

Just wondering I’m confused how u use the jar lid with the holes punched into card stock how does the card stock stay attached to jar? Lol
Becky Says...
Post authorThe lid screws on top of the cardstock 🙂

Hi Becky. I have an acrylic sink with an oil rubbed bronze drain. I have tried cleaners in the past and they have pulled the color off of my oil rubbed bronze drain. Would this work with my sink or would it also damange the finish?
LeAnn Says...
Hello we have a white kitchen sink that I do wipe out every day after we clean the dishes. But, it still looks stained. I have read never use comet because it will scratch. Will the lemon cleaner get out stains on a white sink? Thank you
Becky Says...
Post authorTry it! If that doesn’t work, try Bon Ami powder 🙂
Jenna Says...
Hi Becky, I have lemon already as well, but not clove as another person mentioned. You suggested Orange, Lavender, or Peppermint -all of which I do have. Just curious, what would you think of Tea Tree? same effect, or different?
Maureen Says...
I LOVE this book, use it everyday. Thank you.
Courtney Says...
I am so excited to order this book!!!

We have hard water which stains my sink a sorta of maroon color, I have tried comet and scrubbing it but trying to use more natural things…would this be strong enough to clean the hard water stains/prevent them?
Becky Says...
Post authorTry it and see!
Heidi ELkington Says...
Love your blog! Do you know if this would be ok on a copper sink? If not do you have any ideas?
Becky Says...
Post authorThanks Heidi! It should, but do a quick check on what you can/can’t clean your sink with and if it isn’t on a no-no list, test in a small inconspicuous area.
dharlyn joy m. ladiana Says...
just wondering is the essential oil needed for most of the recipes or is it more for smelling purposes
Becky Says...
Post authorIt’s mostly for scent 🙂
